PROBLEM OF THE DAY -

Find a three-digit number that rounds to 440 and includes a digit that is the quotient of 24 and 3.  Is there more than  one possible answer?  Be ready to explain your thinking.

• Add and subtract decimals: Estimate sums and differences of decimals (Sixth grade - J.3)
• Multiply and divide decimals: Estimate products of decimal numbers (Sixth grade - O.2)
• Division: Estimate quotients (Sixth grade - L.4)

Today we will be estimating decimal sums, differences, products and quotients using three new methods:  Clustering, Compatible Numbers & Front-end estimation.

Clustering - means rounding the numbers to the same value.

Compatible Numbers - these are numbers that are close to the numbers that are in the problem and are helpful when you are solving the problem mentally.

Front-end estimation - used when searching for the range for the sum
